Ida Bell Brown

Birth: March 22, 1922
Death: March 9, 1988
Parents: John and Caroline Brown

Both were beautiful sisters.  They were fraternal twins; thus, they had different personalities and likes and dislikes.  Ida Bell was the more fun loving one; Mary Bell the more serious one.  Ida Bell graduated from Grambling College with a degree in Elementary Ed and taught Irvin in the first grade.  Word has it that she spanked him a few times. She only taught one year in Winnsboro, then she and her husband, George, moved to Buffalo, New York, as was the custom back then in search of a better life.  She hosted the family reunion in Buffalo and attended the one in New Jersey.  One thing I recall as unforgettable was when we went to visit her and she took us to see Della Reese at a club in Buffalo. She always carried us to Canada and Niagra Fall.  She was always very hospitable.  And she was like a mother to John Atlog Brown, our cousin (Jacob's son),when he moved there after getting out of the service.- Earline, Sister

When I was little, I would get all excited whenever I heard my Aunt Ida Bell and Uncle George were coming home.  And I would always be sad when they were getting ready to make that long drive back to Buffalo, New York.  They would come home to Winnsboro every few years as most people did who had migrated to the "north" in search of better jobs and lives.  Since they could only stay a few days, it seems we never got to see them as much as we would have liked.  They were always out visiting someone.  My aunt was always so hospitable whether you were at her house or at someone else's house.  She wanted to make sure you had enough food or did not want for anything.  This was my aunt and I loved her dearly.  I just did not get a chance to spend as much time with her as I would have liked.  - Carolyn, Niece

I remember how much "fun" I always had with Aunt Ida Bell, whether in Buffalo or during her visits to Louisiana and later to California. Our outings to Niagara Falls were never what I would call ordinary. In fact, on one trip, I remember she and a few of her sisters had their palms read. Aunt Ida Bell was always "together" -- from her hair, make-up and dress to her demeanor. But she also kept all of us -- her kids and any nieces/nephews who happened to be visiting -- in line. Georgina looks like her mother and sounds just like Uncle George, her dad. - Angela, Niece
